Focus Group Discussed Area Needs for Recovery, Wellness, and Mental Health
From the Wellness & Community Engagement Team: "It truly means so much that community members took time out of their busy day to join this conversation. When people share their experiences and ideas, it helps foster behavioral health and wellness services that reflect both the strengths and needs of our community. Their voices support connection and belonging and guide us in building responsive, trauma-informed support across the region."
Last week's focus group was hosted at Crossroads in Galax by Mount Rogers Community Services. Anyone in the community was invited to join the conversation as staff from Mount Rogers evaluates regional needs for responding to and supporting families with access to care and treatment for things like substance use disorder, mental health, and wellness.
The program was attended by members of the Galax community, healthcare students, and social workers.
Discussions focused on barriers residents experience while navigating care and treatment for friends and family who struggle with addiction, mental health setbacks, and health conditions. Many in the group pointed to issues with affordability for services, access to transportation, remoteness of being rural, women's healthcare, and supporting youth with diverse abilities.
The conversation also pointed to several groups that already provide services in the region. The Hands & Feet Ministry in Damascus provides resources and support for formerly incarcerated neighbors and for mothers living with substance use disorder. Carroll County Social Services provides support and education to new mothers. The Goodwill Grange in Troutdale offers Grayson neighbors access to internet and computers at their Grant Computer Center. Grayson County Parks & Rec is offering youth adaptive sports programs where kids with diverse abilities can participate in sports tailored to their needs. A program called Recovery Fitness is helping neighbors living with substance use disorder to stay sober.
Mount Rogers took notes during the focus group event and will be looking at ways to respond to community needs across the region.
